The Battle of Verdun is considered the greatest and lengthiest battle during the Great War! Never before has there been such a long battle, involving so many soldiers, fighting on such a small area of land. The Battle of Verdun is now remembered as the battle with the highest density of dead per square yard. The battle, lasted from February 21, 1916 until December 19, 1916 and caused over an estimated 700,000 casualties (dead, wounded and missing). The battlefield was ten square kilometers. The battle was between the French and the German's. (1)
The casualties from Verdun and the impact it had on the French was a primary reason for why the British started the Battle of the Somme in July of 1916 to try to take German pressure off of the French at Verdun. The Battle of Verdun made General Philippe Pétain a hero in France. The attack on Verdun started because of a plan by the German Chief of General Staff, von Falkenhayn. He wanted to "bleed France white" by launching a massive German attack on land that had historic sentiment to France- Verdun. (2)
